CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police say a mistaken report of gunfire in downtown Charleston near the College of Charleston campus can be attributed to noise from construction workers.
Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said a large number of College of Charleston Public Safety officers responded to reports of gunfire at a building near the campus around 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
When they arrived, they determined the reported gunshots were actually just the sounds of construction workers using nailguns.
Francis could not say exactly which building where the gunshots were reported, but several reports circulated on social media indicating the largest swath of officers were found on Calhoun Street at the corner of St. Philip Street.
Viewers said the officers were seen carrying assault rifles.
