WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Police Department says a former Best Buy Mobile employee was arrested after authorities say he stole an iPad after dumping its box at the West Ashley store's toilet.

Investigators arrested Kristopher Jamal Verrett on Monday and charged him with breach of trust with fraudulent intent.

Verrett's arrest stems from an April 14, 2011 incident where police officers responded to the Best Buy Mobile at the Citadel Mall on 2070 Sam Rittenberg Blvd.

A manager told police that on Feb. 15, 2011, back room storage surveillance cameras captured Verrett, who was an employee at the time, take an iPad.

Police say Verrett took the iPad, which was still in its box, into the employee bathroom.

According to store personnel, Verrett spent nearly an hour in the bathroom and did not come out until another employee went to check on him.

Surveillance video appeared to show Verrett had taken the iPad out of the box and hidden it beneath his clothes. Authorities say Verrett then asked if he could leave work for the rest of the day because he was not feeling well.

Store personnel say later that day, the store manager was having problems with the toilet. Authorities say they believed that Verrett had cut the iPad box into smaller pieces and flushed it.

Police say store security officials had arranged several meetings at the time with Verrett for an interview, but Verrett either canceled the meeting due to hospitalization or refused to show.
