GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC (WYFF) - The Greenville County Sheriff's Office says a toddler has died and a 4-year-old girl was injured after a chest of drawers fell on them as they were playing at a Landrum home Tuesday night.

Deputies were called to a home around 11:30 p.m. regarding a 2-year-old that was unresponsive, Lt. Michael Hildebrand said.

The 2-year-old, later identified as Chandler Jerome Shaver, was playing with a 4-year-old girl in a bedroom, when a 5-drawer wooden chest of drawers fell on top of the children, according to Hildebrand.

Neighbors said the children were brother and sister, but the sheriff's office had not confirmed that.

The children were both taken to Greer Hospital where Chandler was pronounced dead less than a half hour later, according to Deputy Coroner Kent Dill.

Dill said Chandler died of compressional asphyxia, meaning he was suffocated by the weight of the dresser.

The girl was treated for her injuries, Hildebrand said.

The 4-year-old was later removed from the home and placed into the care of the South Carolina Department of Social Services, Hildebrand said.

Laura Campbell, with the Sheriff's Office, said the girl was removed due to the condition of the home, not connected to the death of the toddler.

This case remains under investigation.
