WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

A portion of Highway 521 in Andrews was shut down all day Monday after a deadly accident involving an 18-wheeler carrying chemicals.

It happened around 5:30 a.m. between Wheeler Road and Tad Road, near Copper Top Plantation.

The Williamsburg County fire chief said an 18-wheeler carrying bottled Acetate and a van crashed, killing one person and creating a hazmat situation.  Acetate is a derivative of acetic acid.

Troopers said the eastbound semi crossed the center line and hit part of a log truck before crashing into a Honda Accord.

The driver in the Honda was killed.

The road was reopened just before midnight Monday.

South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.  No charges have been filed yet.
