Old Dominion rallied from a three-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth to top Charleston Southern, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Bud Metheny Field.
Charleston Southern falls to 8-16 on the year with the loss, while Old Dominion improves to 13-10.
The Monarchs' Austin McGowen came through with a bases-loaded, pinch-hit single to cap a four-run ninth. McGowen's two-run single was one of three hits in the ninth for ODU, which had been shutout to that point. ODU got a leadoff double from P.J. Higgins, as well as a walk and a hit-by-pitch from CSU's Tory Schroff to load the bases and set the stage for McGowen's game-winning single. Third baseman Jordan Negrini also had an RBI single in the comeback.
CSU seemed to have things under control heading to the bottom of the ninth.
Four Bucs had scattered four hits through eight innings of work as CSU took a 3-0 into ODU's final at-bat. Bucs' starter Kevin Buran worked two innings along with George Schaefer as CSU tried to get work in for its weekend rotation after being rained out twice last weekend against The Citadel. Andrew Tomasovich also had three innings of scoreless work for the Buccaneers.
The Bucs broke a scoreless tie with a run in the eighth as shortstop Alex Tomasovich singled and scored on a Drew Woodall single.
CSU added a pair of run to build its lead to 3-0 in the top of the ninth. Austin Hicks and Robbie Streett put together back-to-back singles and scored on a two-run single by Tomasovich.
Tomasovich and Woodall each had two hits for the Bucs.
Charleston Southern returns to action on Friday against UNC Asheville. The Bucs open a three-game series with the Bulldogs with a 2 p.m. first pitch on Friday and an 11:30 start to Saturday's doubleheader.
