CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police say they have arrested a 49-year-old man who beat his wife and held a knife to her in an attempt to intimidate her into having sex with him.
Donald Shepherd Jr. was taken into custody early Friday morning and charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature.
Police say the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Friday at an apartment on Ashe St.
According to an incident report, an intoxicated Shepherd got into an argument with his wife, and then began to punch her in the face an unknown number of times with a closed hand.
The victim told police her husband said "a woman is not supposed to lay in bed next to her husband with underwear on" and used a large knife to try to cut her underwear off.
Shepherd then held the knife to the victim's chest as a way to intimidate her into having sex with him, despite the victim repeatedly telling him she did not want to, the report states.
Police say the victim showed signs of injury to her upper and lower lip.
Shepherd was arrested and taken to the Charleston County Detention Center. He is scheduled to appear in bond court Friday afternoon.
