Folly Beach park could reopen by mid-summer

Posted: Updated:

FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Officials say the popular park at Folly Beach that closed because of damage from Hurricane Irene's huge waves could re-open by mid-summer.

Officials say the park will have parking and portable bathrooms at a minimum, but it won't have the same amenities as it did before the damage in 2011. Park officials say their priority is to provide public access to the beach.

Folly Beach County Park attracted more than 100,000 people a year and its closing has put pressure on the other two sizeable public beaches during the summer season.

As Hurricane Irene passed by, the storm's huge waves tore through the park's dunes and crossover boardwalks. Since then, surf erosion has progressively eaten at the park and its features.
