Serena, 2 former champions win at Family Circle Cup on Tuesday

Posted: Updated:

Former Family Circle Cup champions Serena Williams, Jelena Jankovic and Sabine Lisicki all advanced while 4th seed Sloane Stephens was upset on Tuesday in 1st and 2nd round action on Billie Jean King court.

Lisicki, the 2009 champion, started things off making easy work of Anna Tatishvili 6-0, 6-0 in just over 40 minutes.

"it's always great if you play so well in the first round.  Gives you lots of confidence." Lisicki said "I played well here so I enjoy being here.  Always play better straightaway once I step on that center court."

The match of the day came next as 2007 champion Jelena Jankovic needed 3 sets and close to 3 hours to get past American Melanie Oudin 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

"It was a point for me just to stay positive and just somehow win this match to get through this one." Jankovic said.  "It was difficult and I think Melanie played quite a good match.  She was hitting the ball very well and I'm grateful that I was able to pull this out."

Top overall seed Serena Williams had little trouble in her 2nd round match with Camila Giorgi winning 6-2, 6-3. But Williams, who's fresh off a tournament title in Miami on a hardcourt surface much different from the green clay in Charleston, still feels she has room for improvement.

"It was definitely not great for me.  I mean, I think I played well, but I wasn't great footing wise, I was just trying to get my stability and, you know, only had one or two days of practice, so -- but it's good.  I felt really good.  I think I played someone really good today and it's good to get this under my belt."

The biggest upset of the day came in the nightcap as 4th seed Sloane Stephens was upset by Wild Card Bethany Mattek-Sands in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.

"definitely I was disappointed with the way I was playing and I was like oh, my God, this is terrible." Stephens said. " But I mean obviously I really love clay, so to get out and not be able to play so well is definitely disappointing.  But I mean, what can you do?  Sometimes you are just going to not play so well and she played a good match.  So I mean nothing really I could do."

"You know, I feel like I played very well today.  Sloane is a tough competitor.  She has a lot of confidence this year.  I mean, she is a great player and on top of that I lost to her twice last year, so it was a little bit of a revenge match for me." Mattek-Sands said. "But I really stuck to my game plan regardless of how she was going to play, you know, I wanted to play aggressive.  I kind of wanted to make it shorter than yesterday either way, win or lose, but I was going to be there grinding and playing aggressive and I think that's what I did."

Three more former champs will be in action on Wednesday as Caroline Wozniacki, Sam Stosur and Venus Williams all play their first matches of the tournament. Lisicki and Jankovic will also be in action.
