A Sumter County man is under arrest after investigators say his neglect to care for his bed-ridden wife caused her death.

Deputies found 78-year-old Louise Wilson malnourished in what they described as "very unlivable conditions" in the couple's James Street home on March 15th.  Wilson died at the hospital a week later.

After her death, deputies charged Wilson's husband, 74-year-old Issac, with neglect of a vulnerable adult resulting in death.

"In my law enforcement career, that's the worst case of something like that I've ever seen," said Sumter County Sheriff's Office Capt. Allen Dailey.

EMS crews were first called to the home on March 15th, where they reported filthy conditions and so much trash they had to force their way inside.  Upon finding Louise Wilson lying unconscious in a bed, EMS crews reported she had open sores, a green substance covering her legs, and the skin peeling off. They also described her feet were blackened and her toenails were not cut.

Wilson was so malnourished, EMS crews said they could see her bones through her skin.

After seeing the living conditions of the home, EMS crews called deputies. When they arrived, Issac Wilson told them the could not go inside the home until he "cleaned up."

Investigators determined that "Louise Wilson had been in the bed for a period of time without being moved or cared for." They say Wilson "died as a direct result of the neglect from Isaac Wilson."
