CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

More than 30 Citadel cadets will run in the Cooper River Bridge Run in honor of Army Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, who was killed on Jan 10 in Afghanistan.

Officials with the Citadel say Wittman, who was on his second tour in Afghanistan, was the first war casualty of 2013 when he was killed. He is The Citadel's 18th alumnus to die in the war on terror.

He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Ga.

The cadets participating in the bridge run will be joined by dozens of Wittman's classmates, friends and family to raise money for a scholarship named for Wittman. The first scholarship is slated to be awarded in 2014.
