Former Family Circle Cup champions Caroline Wozniacki, Sam Stosur and Jelena Jankovic all picked up wins in the afternoon session while another former winner, Sabine Lisicki was upset on Wednesday on Daniel Island.
In the nightcap, Venus Williams was pushed harder than expected but still came away with a victory in her season debut in the Lowcountry.
Williams needed over 2 hours and 20 minutes to advance but did get a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win over Monica Puig. She'll turn around and have an afternoon match against Varvara Lepchenko.
Wozniacki, the 2011 winner, made quick work in her first match in the tournament since winning the title. She beat Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-1, 6-1 in just over an hour. Wozniacki will face fellow Wild Card Andrea Petkovic on Thursday and she seemed satisfied with her return to play in Charleston.
"I felt like I served really well today. I returned really well. I think, you know, playing the first match on clay it's always difficult to slide and really move unbelievably, but you know, I felt like I did a pretty good job out there and I'm pleased with my work." Wozniacki said.
Stosur, the 2010 champion, moved equally fast in her match today beating Marina Erakovic 6-1, 6-2 in an hour and 13 minutes. She'll have the night match against Eugenie Bouchard. The tournament's third seed was happy with how she played, especially coming off a calf injury.
"probably didn't expect to win a match one and two, but as the match went on I felt -- like I said, I felt really good and was very pleased with the way that I was playing and it all came together." Stosur said. "I enjoyed playing on this court, so I certainly try and do my best every time I'm out there."
Jankovic, the 2007 winner, had another marathon match just a day after she and Melanie Oudin seemed to play for an eternity. Jankovic was taken to 3 sets by qualifier Caroline Garcia, but she battled back after dropping the first set 5-7, 7-6 (10), 6-3. She faces another qualifier, Jessica Pegulia on Thursday.
The upset of the afternoon came when 2009 winner Sabine Lisicki fell to qualifier Mallory Burdette, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5. Burdette will have her hands full on Thursday as she'll face top overall seed Serena Williams. But this is all part of an exciting week for Burdette, who has family from Charleston.
"You know, for me it already has been a very special week and lots of fun. I have really enjoy myself here in Charleston. My mom is from here originally and so we have had a lot of fun going out to dinner and I just feel very relaxed and comfortable here." Burdette said. "And I'm really looking forward to my next round, I think it will be a great experience to play Serena and to see how my game matches up against the best."
Sixth seeded Lucie Safarova also picked up a win beating Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 7-5, 6-1
