Rain Wreaks Havoc On Thursday At Family Circle Cup

The weather was in control for most of the day as play was delayed until 6:30pm at the Family Circle Cup on Thursday. Because of the delays several matches were cancelled and some players will have to play twice on Friday.

When play did begin, one former champion advanced, while another had to pull out due to injury.

2010 winner Sam Stosur had problems overcoming a calf injury the entire evening. She dropped the first set to qualifier Eugenie Bouchard 6-1 and was forced to retire after falling behind 2-0 in the 2nd set. The Canada native said after the match, this was the biggest win of her career.

"I was prepared for anything." Bouchard said "Obviously she's an amazing player.  She won a Slam.  So I was really ready for her great kick serves and her forehands, but I really tried to take it to her and tried to be the first one to do a good shot, tried to make her move, and yeah, I'm really happy with the way I did my job today."

Jelena Jankovic was the first player to get a win on Thursday when she beat qualifier Jessica Pegula 6-0, 6-4. The 2007 champion said it was tough staying ready to play the entire day throughout the weather delays.

"it was very difficult, I think for all of us, to wait around and just keep on standing by.  You never know when I was going to go on court and when was my time to play, and I just had to be ready all the time and wait, and I was scheduled to be third on after 11, and I ended up being first, and I was the only one that went on court at the end." she said. "So at the end of the day I was lucky, but I wasn't -- I came out on court and played quite well, despite waiting around all day and not knowing when I was going to go on court."

The one player who didn't have to play and still advanced was Caroline Wozniacki. She was granted a walkover early in the day when Andrea Petkovic had to withdraw due to a right calf injury.

Venus and Serena Williams each had their matches rained out so both will have to play 2 matches on Friday if they're going to advance to the semifinals.
