College of Charleston sophomore shortstop Gunnar Heidt has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Month for March, the conference office announced Friday.
A native of Garden City, S.C., Heidt hit .384 with 18 runs scored, 20 RBIs, 13 walks, five stolen bases and nine extra-base hits in March, helping the Cougars to a 12-7 record and a 7-4 start in league play. He recorded a team-high slugging percentage of .575 during the month and leads the Cougars in most offensive categories for the whole season.
Heidt hit safely in 15 of 19 games during the month, leading the Cougars to big series wins over then-No. 30 South Alabama, Elon and Samford.
Last weekend in a sweep at Samford, he hit .471 with nine RBIs, including a career-high five-RBI performance with a three-run homer on Saturday.
Heidt currently leads the Southern Conference with five triples, a mark that ties him for second in the country.
This award is the first career conference honor for Heidt, and the first SoCon monthly award for CofC Baseball in the 2013 season.
