UNCG Defeats Charleston, 12-0, In First Game Of Series


UNCG scored 12 runs on 17 hits to defeat College of Charleston, 12-0, in the first game of the weekend SoCon series. 

UNCG (16-14, 4-6) hit nine extra-base hits while holding the Cougars (16-13, 7-5) to just five hits on the night. 

Spartan starter Max Povse (2-1) pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out seven. CofC's Matt Pegler (1-2) suffered his second loss of the season, going 4.1 IP and allowing a season-high six runs on 13 hits. 

Trevor Edwards led UNCG with a double and home run, tallying three RBIs and scoring three runs. Eric Kalbfleisch hit a three-run homer for the Spartans, while Ray Crawford had two RBIs and two runs. Cambric Moye went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and TJ Spina recorded two RBI. 

The only hits for College of Charleston came off the bats of Brandon Murray and Ryan Welke. Murray had three hits including one double, while Welke had two doubles on the game. Both players were stranded on base. 

UNCG scored a run in the top of the first with doubles from Christian Wolfe and Edwards. A double from Lloyd Enzor and single from Benigno Marrero kicked off the fourth inning. Crawford hit a two-out single to score both runners, and then Edwards homered to put UNCG up 5-0 after four. 

The Cougars never threatened for the rest of the game as UNCG scored one in the fifth, two in the sixth and four in the seventh inning to take the 12-0 victory.

12 runs and 17 hits were the most allowed by College of Charleston this season. 

Game two of the series will be Saturday evening at 6 p.m. CofC's Nathan Helvey will take the mound against UNCG's Corey Taylor.
