A new historic marker was unveiled Saturday for the Cigar Factory in Downtown Charleston.
Many people might not have known, but the Preservation Society of Charleston says the site, which is located near Columbus and Drake Streets, is the birthplace of the song "We Shall Overcome".
The song was an anthem for civil rights protesters.
The historic marker made its debut in the Eastside neighborhood. The Cigar Factory is closed, but community leaders say they have high hopes for the future of the site.
Today's unveiling is part of a larger effort by the Preservation Society of Charleston to save sites from the civil-rights era.
