CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

They are knobs no longer.

The Citadel Class of 2016 marked the end of their freshman, or "knob," year at the military college with a recognition day on Saturday.

Events included running a victory lap across the campus and participation in "the Gauntlet" – a series of rigorous tasks.

"They're just fostering camaraderie," Regimental Public Affairs Officer Angel Johnson said.  "It's just hard work mentally and physically, just to build them up as a class."

Recognition Day is a milestone in each cadet's leadership development meant to reinforce the concept of teamwork and overcoming adversity through physical challenges and the tenacity to succeed, according to the college.
