Orangeburg jail inspection finds problems

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - The annual state inspection of a South Carolina detention center where four inmates have died in recent months found numerous problems with staffing levels, furnishings and operations.

The inspection of the Orangeburg Detention didn't mention the deaths, 2 of which occurred after the state evaluators were there.

County administrator Harold Young says the county is working to correct some problems noted in the report. Other problems, such as making physical repairs, are more costly.

The state inspection took place Jan. 7. Two deaths were suicide by hanging, and one is still under investigation. Officials say the fourth inmate died after falling out of his bed.
