JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Parks Conservancy and community members were in James Island Tuesday morning to officially dedicate the city's newly renovated tennis center.
The dedication took place Tuesday morning at the Maybank Tennis Center after renovations were completed in October 2012. Officials say the original courts were roughly 40-year-old and in desperate need of repairs.
The City of Charleston, along with the Charleston Parks Conservancy and community members, came together to raise money for the project, which included six hard courts and three clay courts. Six of the eight original courts at the Maybank Tennis Center were demolished and rebuilt.
In addition to rebuilding the courts, crews also worked to raise the elevation of the courts and installed two detention ponds to reduce flooding. New lighting, sidewalks, drinking fountains, and a 49 spot parking area were also built.
All of the James Island schools tennis teams use the court. It is also used for league play and for lessons.
