Sen. Lindsey Graham introduces bill to prevent gun violence

WASHINGTON (WCSC) - - Senators Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz and Chuck Grassley introduced a bill on Wednesday as a substitute to the Toomey-Manchin background check amendment, which failed to pass the Senate on Wednesday.

According to lawmakers, the Grassley-Cruz-Graham bill improves the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, increases resources for prosecutions of gun crime and addresses mental illness in the criminal justice system, among other things.

This follows on the news that the "Boland Bill," which seeks to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, has passed in the South Carolina House of Representatives, according to lawmakers.

On Wednesday, Charleston State Rep. Leon Stavrinakis praised his colleagues for the unanimous passing of the bill which is designed to improve reporting requirements to the National Instant Criminal Background Check system.
