Citadel VP selected as SC State's next president

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WIS) - The South Carolina State Board of Trustees has chosen current Citadel chief operations officer Dr. Thomas Elzey to be the school's 11th president.

The board voted 6-5 in favor of Elzey over current interim president Dr. Cynthia Warrick. Warrick was not one of the finalists chosen by the search committee, but was allowed to be considered via "write-in" vote.

In February, students staged a protest to show their support of Warrick to become the school's permanent president.

Elzey is The Citadel's senior, non-academic vice president, holding the rank of brigadier general in the South Carolina Militia.  Upon hearing the news, Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa issued this statement:

I would like to be among the first to congratulate Tom Elzey on his selection as president of S.C State.  Tom brings to S.C. State the leadership and vision he provided so admirably to The Citadel.  I will miss Tom but his talent and abilities will serve S.C. State well.

SCSU has been without a permanent president since Dr. George Cooper resigned in March of 2012.

Warrick will serve as interim president until the end of June.
