Shots fired near MIT campus, officer killed

CAMBRIDGE, MA (RNN) - A Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus officer was shot and pronounced dead at the hospital Thursday, according to CNN.

According to the Middlesex, MA, district attorney the officer was responding to a disturbance and "sustained multiple gunshot wounds."

The officer's name has not been released.

An emergency alert was sent to students that around 10:48 p.m. EDT that gunshots were reported near Building 32. The alert reported at 11:41 p.m. reports that an injury has been reported.

According to the MIT website, shots were fired on campus.

No suspect has been captured, according to the Cambridge, MA, Police Department's Twitter account.

Both FBI and local police responded to the police call. Officials are "actively investigating the situation, which remains very fluid at this time."

The building is the Ray and Maria Stata Center, a large student activity center that houses various scholastic departments, campus visitors center, an auditorium and restaurants.

Officers are sweeping the campus in Cambridge, MA, which is more than three miles from Boston, where people in the surrounding areas are still shaken after the Boston Marathon bombing Monday.

Officials are urging those on campus to stay indoors during the search.
