Swastikas and 'KKK' drawn on Goose Creek driveway

GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - Since 1996, Sheila and David Smith have lived in a beautiful two-story home in Crowfield Plantation. The couple says they have good neighbors and a great lawn but it's what showed up on their driveway Monday morning that has their full attention.

"It's frightening," said Sheila Smith. "I'm having a difficult time of not... crying... number one... and just being upset about it. It's not a good feeling."

Smith says she did a double take on her way out to retrieve her recycling bins Monday.

"I was startled because this is the first time I've ever seen anything like this on my property or anywhere else," she said. "Seeing the swastika that's one thing and I might think it would be kids but when you put the 'KKK' with the swastika it's a little more intimidating to me."

A swastika the size of a spare tire was drawn in pink chalk near her mailbox.  Another larger swastika, outlined in green, is closer to the couple's front door.

"I came out and saw the drawings on the driveway and walked around the neighborhood to see if there was anymore," said her husband David. "It just made me angry."

David Smith, a 26-year Air Force veteran, says he isn't too phased by the drawings like his wife is, however, he's quick to point out that there has to be a reason for them on his driveway.

Whatever that reason may be, Sheila Smith decided it's best the Goose Creek Police find it out.

"It makes me angry that someone would be so insensitive," said David. "You cross the line when you deface somebody else's property. It's an insult."

The couple says police took pictures of the drawings and even found the chalk used to create them nearby. Both pieces of evidence will be added to their investigation.

"It's very, very threatening to me." added David. "I take it as an insult and a threat. It's inappropriate and nobody should have to deal with that type of intimidation."
