CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - America's waistline is growing. In fact, South Carolina has the eighth highest obesity rate in the country. But Charleston is ready to see the city slim down.
The Charleston RiverDogs and the Medical University of South Carolina have teamed up with Lighten Up Charleston for a healthy challenge competition.
It's a biggest loser competition of sorts, all with hopes to get more local folks into the gym to lose those unwanted pounds and to learn the dangers of being obese.
Anyone can be a part of the healthy challenge competition, a program to help locals fight obesity.
The challenge starts Tuesday evening with weigh-ins at Joe Riley park and will continue every Tuesday until Aug. 20.
The community's goal is to lose 100,000 pounds with the final weigh-in on Aug. 20. Lots of prizes are up for grabs including personal training sessions, fresh produce from MUSC's urban farm and RiverDogs season tickets for next year.
