JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The first of three new C-17's scheduled to be delivered to the Air Force will arrive at Joint Base Charleston on Thursday.
The aircraft will be flown from Long Beach, California and will be assigned to the 437th Airlift Wing at the Joint Base.
According to a release, "the C-17 Globemaster III is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area."
It will also be used for airlift and airdrop missions, as well as assisting with transportation during evacuations.
Two additional C-17's will be delivered to Joint Base Charleston by September 2013. The base, which currently houses 51 C-17's, will ultimately retain 52 C-17's after transferring existing aircrafts.
