Growing up, Clint Bowyer cut his teeth driving the short track circuit of the Midwest. Now that he is a big time Sprint Cup driver, he is hoping that his short track experience puts him back in the winner's circle this week in Richmond.

"I grew up racing short tracks," reflected Bowyer on his upbringing. "I enjoy the short tracks. I'm relatively good on the short tracks, and that's why I like them."

A lot of drivers struggle when it comes to race tracks that are less than a mile. Bowyer feels the reason for that can be boiled down to one word: comfort.

"You've got to hit your marks, you've got to be precise, and you've got to get your car handling, but more importantly, get comfortable," said Bowyer on what it takes to go fast on short tracks. "On the short tracks, things happen so fast, if you're not comfortable, if you're tense and up on the wheel and just can't get settled into a pace, it seems like you struggle really bad."

With two wins at Richmond so early in his short Cup Series career, Bowyer has certainly found his comfort zone and hopes that will help him defend his victory from last season.

"Once you win at a racetrack, every time you go back there after that, there's always something you can carry in and that's confidence," said Bowyer on his mindset as he heads to Richmond.

Most drivers have a favorite race track, and Richmond is Bowyer's.

"Richmond is one of the coolest racetracks on the circuit," said the Michael Waltrip Racing driver. "It always has been in my mind. I think it's a perfect blend of speed, but it's also short track racing at its best."

Bowyer is one of those guys that are relaxed outside the track but very intense once he climbs behind the wheel. Somehow, he has managed to combine those two characteristics, and that makes him a threat this week in Richmond.
