Survivor of domestic violence gets new surgery, new outlook

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Midstate woman who survived a horrific episode of domestic violence is on the road to a full recovery, thanks to the help of a Vanderbilt surgeon.

Life changed for Lindsay Arp on April 11, 2011, when her boyfriend of several years - and the father of two of her children - doused her with scalding hot oil while she slept in their Marshall County home.

Arp's face and neck were severely disfigured, and the attack was so heinous that the assistant district attorney said at the time, "There are some crimes worse than murder."

Ryan Haase was convicted of attempted first-degree murder in the case and was given the maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.

After Channel 4 News first aired Arp's story of survival in February, many viewers wrote and called to ask how they could help the young mother.

One of those viewers was Vanderbilt surgeon Dr. Blair Summitt, who waved all of his fees and performed a nine-hour reconstructive procedure on Arp.

It's the first of many reconstructive procedures Arp will have to undergo, but by far, it's the most important one.

Before her surgery, Arp had been unable to move her head without turning her entire body, but now - for the first time in two years - Arp can freely move her head. In future procedures, a large flap of tissue on her neck will eventually be removed.

Kathy Walsh, executive director of the Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic And Sexual Violence, said anyone facing domestic violence should immediately find a safer environment.

"If you're in an abusive situation, please reach out. Call the shelter, call law enforcement, call a friend, but get out," said Walsh.

The Coalition has started a fundraising page on their website. Walsh said she hopes people visit the page and donate money to help Arp and her children. For more information, visit: tncoalition.org.
