SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A 47-year-old man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a store clerk nearly 29 years ago has been sentenced to 30 years behind bars.
According to the First Circuit Solicitor's Office, it took a Dorchester County jury approximately one hour to convict Herbert Leroy Holmes of one count of first degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of kidnapping on Thursday, April 25.
Once a cold case, Holmes was charged in 2009 with the sexual assault of a Summerville bookstore employee in October 1984.
Dorchester County deputies say Holmes went into a business into the business, robbed the clerk, dragged her into a back room and sexually assaulted her.
According to the sheriff's office, evidence gathered during the original investigation was reexamined and DNA was identified using the combined DNA index system (CODIS). The DNA was found to belong to Holmes.
At the time, Holmes was serving time for a set of rapes in 1989 in Berkeley County.
