RiverDogs Win Pitchers’ Duel 1-0

It was a scoreless game through seven innings in a pitchers' duel between the Charleston RiverDogs and the Kannapolis Intimidators Sunday night in South Atlantic League play at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in front of 3,621 fans. Taylor Dugas scored the game's only run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the RiverDogs a 1-0 victory. The RiverDogs (13-10) remain in fourth place in the Southern Division, while the Intimidators (10-14) are in fifth place in the Northern Division.

Starting pitcher Jake Cose had a very strong performance on the mound for Kannapolis. Cose threw seven innings, allowed no runs, gave up only one hit, and struck out six batters and earned a no decision. The RiverDogs did not have a base runner until the fourth inning when Greg Bird walked. Bird then advanced to second on a passed ball but was left stranded.

Cose's no hitter was broken up in the sixth inning by an infield single by Jake Cave. The RiverDogs had runners on first and second with two outs after Cito Culver reached on an error. Charleston was unable to score, however, as Bird ended the inning with a ground out to second.

RiverDogs starting pitcher Gabe Encinas was equally as impressive before he was relieved by Ben Paullus (1-0). In 6 innings of work he allowed no runs on five hits and struck out three batters, but he too did not factor in the decision. Paullus shut down the Intimidators with scoreless 7th and 8th innings and earned his first win of the season.

Braulio Ortiz came on in relief of Cose in the bottom of the eighth. Taylor Dugas reached base on a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch then allowed Dugas to score the first and only run of the night.

Taylor Garrison pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Charleston and picked up his third save of the season.

BALLPARK FUN: Kannapolis pitcher Jake Cose took a no hitter into the sixth inning. It was also the second Dog Day of the season and Miller Coors Aluminum Pint Night at The Joe.
