CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A seventh-grade student from Pinewood Preparatory School will be one of 54 finalists taking part in the 2013 National Geographic Bee.

Krish Patel earned a spot in the 25th Annual National Geographic Bee after being named the South Carolina State Champion. He will travel to Washington D.C. to participate in the final championship round on May 22 at the National Theater.

The round will be moderated by "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek and will be televised on the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.

Patel beat out 100 students from schools across the state to be named the South Carolina Champion, only missing one question out of almost two dozen rounds of questioning.

This is the third time he has been named State Champion.

As the South Carolina champion, Patel received $100, "The Complete National Geographic" on DVD, and an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the national championship.

The winner of the National Geographic Bee will take home a $25,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society. They will also win an all expense paid trip to the Galápagos Islands to take part in an expedition on the National Geographic Endeavour.
