COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - State Law Enforcement Division agents are investigating following a suspicious fire outside of Smoaks last weekend.
According to Colleton County Fire & Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, firefighters responded to the mobile home at 1140 Community Avenue, just north of Smoaks, on Sunday morning to find the structure engulfed in flames.
McRoy said about half the home was burning when firefighters arrived just before 9 a.m. The roof and floor in the center of the residence had already burned away. McRoy said flames under the floor in the insulation presented problems and took a great deal of time to be extinguished.
The home suffered substantial damage and most personal belongings were destroyed.
No one was home at the time of the fire.
McRoy said the origin of the fire was suspicious, which prompted Colleton County Sheriff's Office deputies to contact the SLED arson unit.
McRoy said firefighters were on scene for nearly four hours. Investigators remained on site for much of the day.
