Four arrested in Charleston tax fraud investigation

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Officials with the SC Department of Revenue say four people were arrested following an investigation into tax fraud scams in the Charleston area.

Authorities arrested 29-year-old Rhykiel Smalls of Mt. Pleasant, 31-year-old Rochelle Jefferson of North Charleston, 26-year-old Christopher Young of McClellanville and 32-year-old Kimeshia Jackson.

Smalls was charged with assisting in the preparation of a fraudulent income tax return and forgery. Smalls faces up to 15 years in prison. According to officials, Smalls filed a 2009 income tax return using a fraudulent W-2 form and claimed tax refunds totaling $6,603.

Jefferson is accused of submitting 2008 and 2009 income tax returns using fraudulent W-2 forms and received tax refunds totaling $5,574.

A press release states Young received tax refunds for 2009 and 2011 totaling $4,076 and $7,450, while Jackson claimed tax refunds totaling $4,484.

Both Smalls and Jefferson could face up to 15 years in prison and possibly fines. Jackson faces up to five years in prison, while Young could face up to 10 years.
