USS Yorktown cleanup to cost less than projected

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) - It will cost less than projected to clean hazardous chemicals and liquids from the aging aircraft carrier USS Yorktown in Charleston Harbor.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the cost of cleaning 160,000 gallons of petroleum residue and about 1.5 million gallons of contaminated water in compartments below decks will cost about $4.5 million.

Earlier projections had put the cost at about $6 million.

The board of the Patriot's Point Naval and Maritime Museum was told Wednesday that there are no leaks in the hull so the material does not pose a threat to the harbor.

Cleaning the material is the first step in work to restore the 70-year-old vessel. The estimate for that is about $80 million.
