SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Officers from local police departments traded in their uniforms for running shorts Thursday morning to raise money for Special Olympians.
The Coast to the Capital relay started on Sullivan's Island with a lit torch called the "Flame of Hope."
The relay is scheduled to end Friday morning at the state capital in Columbia. The officers will run about 127 miles.
"This is just one way of us giving back, putting in some sweat equity," said Mt. Pleasant Police Major Stan Gragg, who helped organize the event.
The local relay is one of several being held around the state. Friday evening, officers will join forces for an eight mile run from the capital to Fort Jackson ,where the torch will be carried into the Summer Games.
