AWENDAW, SC (WCSC) - A fire that destroyed a home near Buck Hall Landing Road is delaying traffic on Highway 17 in Awendaw. One lane is expected to remain closed for a few hours while firefighters put out hotspots and investigate the cause.

Firefighter with the Awendaw Fire District were called out to home along Hwy. 17 near Buck Hall Landing Road at 2:36 a.m. Firefighters say manpower was an issue in fighting the fire because they had to bring in their own water to douse the flames.

An elderly couple who lived in the home got out safely. The wife woke up to smoke spilling into her bedroom, woke her husband up and got them both out of the home, neighbors said.

Neighbors also say the home's fire detector did not go off. The couple is staying with nearby family, according to neighbors.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
