COLUMBUS, TX (KHOU/CNN) - A small show of faith cost a team the chance to compete at a state track meet.

High school junior Derrick Hayes, the anchor of his high school relay team, made a small gesture as he was the first to cross the finish line.

"At the end of the race, he put his hand by his ear and just pointed at the heavens," said his father K.C. Hayes.

The moment of gratitude and reflection cost his team a trip to the state finals.

According to the rules that govern Texas high school sports, you cannot show any excessive act of celebration, hand included - at all.

Parents have complained to the state, but as it stands currently, the four students-athletes that make up the Columbus High School have no chance of advancing.

Many citizens in Columbus, TX feel it is a violation of religious freedom.
