Top ranked Vanderbilt raced out to a five-run lead and despite a pair of runs from ninth ranked South Carolina in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Gamecocks were defeated 5-2 on Saturday afternoon in game two off a three-game SEC baseball series at Carolina Stadium. The Commodores are now 41-6 and 21-2 in the SEC with South Carolina 33-14 and 13-10 in league play. The final game of the series has been moved to Noon due to the weather forecast in Columbia on Sunday. It will be televised live on CSS and can be heard on the Gamecock Radio Network from IMG College including flagship station, 107.5 FM, "The Game."
Vanderbilt starter Tyler Beede took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and earned the win. He is now 12-0 on the year in 12 starts. He allowed two runs on two hits in 6.1 innings with four walks and seven strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Carson Fulmer hurled 2.2 scoreless innings out of the pen to pick up his fourth save of the season. South Carolina starter Jordan Montgomery suffered the loss and is now 3-1 on the year. He allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits in 2.2 innings with a walk.
The Commodores broke ahead 3-0 in the top of the second inning. Zander Wiel reached base to lead off the frame on a hit by pitch followed by a base hit by Vince Conde. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, Jack Lupo drove in both with a RBI single up the middle. Lupo eventually scored the third run as he stole second, advanced on a throwing error by catcher Grayson Greiner and made it home on a fielder's choice.
Vanderbilt added a run in the top of the third inning. Harrell reached base with one out on a fielder's choice. He would advance to second on a deep fly by Gregor to center field and scored on Wiel's RBI base hit to right field. They would score one more in the seventh inning on Wiel's second RBI base hit of the day.
Carolina mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Joey Pankake led off with a walk and LB Dantzler knocked a base hit into right field to give Carolina a pair of runners with no outs. Max Schrock kept the hit parade going with a base hit up the middle scoring Pankake and cutting the deficit to four runs. With two outs, Sean Sullivan knocked a RBI base hit to left field off Fulmer scoring Dantzler and bringing the Gamecocks to within three runs. Fulmer would get out of the inning with a fielder's choice off the bat of English. He would not allow a hit in the final two innings.
Vanderbilt had 14 hits for the afternoon, all singles. Conde, Wiel and Yastrzemski all tallied three hits apiece to lead the Commodores.
