College of Charleston senior starting pitcher Matt Pegler has been named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Pegler helped the Cougars win the series over Wofford with a 3-0 shutout victory in Saturday's rubber game. The Preseason SoCon Pitcher of the Year, Pegler tossed seven innings and allowed just two hits en route to his first partial shutout of the season.
He also set a new career record with 10 strikeouts and gave up just one walk. In his last two outings, Pegler has gone 2-0 with no earned runs in 14 innings and 18 strikeouts. He has brought his season ERA back down to 3.55 which ranks sixth in the league. Pegler currently sports a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 6.0 which leads the SoCon and ranks 22nd in the nation.
This was Pegler's first weekly honor of the 2013 season, and first pitching award for the Cougar staff which leads the conference with a 4.05 ERA.
