CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The "Battle of the Carolinas" is coming to Charlotte as the University of South Carolina will face off with the University of North Carolina to kick off the 2015 college football season.
The Charlotte Sports Foundation announced on Thursday morning that it secured a regular season college football game for the city of Charlotte, pitting the Tar Heels against the Gamecocks.
The game will take place on September 5, 2015 at Bank of America Stadium. The kickoff time and ticket information will be announced at a later date.
Athletic directors Ray Tanner, from South Carolina, and Bubba Cunningham, from North Carolina, took part in the press conference on Thursday morning.
South Carolina won a coin toss and chose to be the home team for the game. If the two teams meet again in Charlotte, UNC will be the automatic home team.
"We are extremely excited to bring these national football powers and regional rivals together in Charlotte for college football," said Will Webb, Executive Director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation.
"Both North Carolina and South Carolina have a strong alumni presence in the region. This will be a tremendous game featuring a marquee matchup of ACC and SEC teams. We look forward to hosting the Tar Heel and Gamecock teams and fans in Charlotte."
The Charlotte Sports Foundation, a non-profit organization, runs the Belk Bowl and serves as the local organizing committee for the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game.
