SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office says a state trooper, who was responding to a motorcycle wreck on Highway 17A, struck an SUV which pulled onto the highway in front of the trooper's marked cruiser.
Authorities say the wreck happened on Highway 176 near Cane Bay High School around 7:15 a.m.
A preliminary report states the trooper was responding to an earlier wreck involving a motorcycle and a truck at Highway 17-A and Old Summerville Road.
According to the sheriff's office, their investigation revealed that the trooper did have blue lights and a siren activated on his vehicle when the cruiser struck the SUV. An incident report states that traffic was pulling over for the cruiser when the SUV pulled onto the highway in front of the cruiser.
Both the trooper and the driver of the SUV were transported to local hospitals. The trooper has since been released from the hospital. No condition has been given for the driver of the SUV.
Authorities said the trooper was responding to a wreck involving a motorcycle at the intersection of Old Summerville Road, Highway 17A, and College Park Road around 7 a.m.
Troopers said a helicopter was called to the scene to transport the victim to MUSC.
