Academic Magnet, Wando Win Girls State Soccer Titles

AAAA Girls State Championship

Wando 2  JL Mann 0

Rachel Torlay scored 4 minutes into the game and the Warriors never looked back as Wando won their 3rd state title in the last 4 years with a 2-0 win over JL Mann at Gilbert High School on Friday Night.

The win caps off an amazing 4 year run for Wando who has gone 88-4 in the last 4 seasons.

Senior Hannah Ross added the 2nd goal in the 2nd half to put the game out of reach.

"Our goal all year was to win the state championship" said Wando Head Coach Shannon Camp "Our goal was to bring the state championship trophy back to Mt. Pleasant and that's where it's going."

AA Girls State Championship

Academic Magnet 2  Christ Church 1  F/PK

Kallie Peurifoy scored the game tying goal with 90 seconds left in regulation and Maegan Reed had the game winning score in penalty kicks to give Academic Magnet the AA Girls Soccer state championship with a win over Christ Church at Gilbert High School on Friday.

The victory gave the Raptors a little revenge as it was the Cavaliers who beat them in the state finals last season.

It looked like Christ Church would do it again in 2013 as Sitton Furman scored in the first half to give the Cavs a 1-0 lead at the half.

Academic Magnet had all sorts of opportunities in the 2nd half but couldn't get anything to go until Peurifoy, who scored her 100th career goal earlier in the postseason, scored with just over 1:30 left in regulation to tie things up at 1-1.

The two teams would play two 10 minute overtimes and two 5 minute sudden death overtimes without scoring which sent the game into penalty kicks.

Each squad would score on their first 5 kicks sending it to sudden death. Christ Church's Josephine Oakley came to take her shot but it sailed high and wide opening the door for Academic Magnet.

Head Coach Anna Merriman would send Reed, a Freshman, to take the shot. Aiming for the high left side of the goal, Reed buried it giving the Raptors the state title.

"I was really nervous but I knew we deserved it" Reed said "I just tried to stay calm."

"We haven't won a game in penalty kicks all year" Merriman said "so we've been practicing, practicing, practicing so we could hopefully win in the end if we had to."
