Traffic stop leads to drug dealing charges for couple

JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Police Department arrested two people for drug dealing charges following a traffic stop on Johns Island.

Investigators arrested 27-year-old Edward Jerrell Rivers and 21-year-old Antionette Nicole Spehar.

On Friday night, police were patrolling the area of Brownswood Road and Comsee Lane when officers spotted the suspects' vehicle crossing a double solid line in the roadway twice.

Police say when officers pulled the suspects' car over, authorities detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and saw what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette in Rivers' lap.

After exiting the vehicle, Rivers, the driver of the car, looked toward his lap and said, "That's all I got."

When officers asked Rivers if they could search the vehicle, Rivers said,"Yeah, there's nothing else in there."

A police report states investigators found a plastic bag with 1.1 grams of cocaine base under Spehar's purse. Officers say they also found $3908 in cash in small denominations in Rivers' jeans pocket.

According to police, when Rivers arrived at the Charleston County Detention Center, he said,"Should I give you my stuff to you or the detention officers."

Authorities say Rivers then held out his hand hands which had 3.4 grams of cocaine, .8 grams of cocaine base and a gram of marijuana.

Rivers was charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine base and marijuana, and issued a citation for simple possession of marijuana and improper lane use. Spehar was also charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine base.
