Police: Upstate woman killed boyfriend with shotgun

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC (WYFF) - A Spartanburg woman is under arrest after police say she shot and killed her boyfriend with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Erika Michelle Sutelman, 21, who lives in the apartment where the shooting happened, faces one count of murder, according to arrest warrants.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday for David Allen Moholland, 20, who died as a result of the shooting, according to the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office.

The shooting happened Monday about 5:45 p.m. at the Crown Point Apartments on Powell Mill Road, according to a release from Capt. Regina Nowak, with Spartanburg Public Safety.

When officers arrived, they found Moholland on the floor of an apartment with a gunshot wound to the chest, Nowak said.

Officers tried to give Moholland aid, but he died at the scene, according to Nowak.

Sutelman told officers she had a brown and black Mossburg 12-gauge shotgun in her hands as she and Moholland were playing around in the apartment, according to the incident report. Sutelman said she thought the safety was in the on position, so she pulled the trigger and the gun fired a single shot at Moholland, the report said.

Another couple was in the apartment at the time of the shooting, according to the report. They told officers they heard the shot, but were in another room when the shooting happened, the report said. The couple was taken in for questioning, the report said.
