ETX Boy Scout troop leaders carefully watching vote on ban of openly gay scouts

The Boy Scouts of America started a two day meeting in Grapevine to consider changing its long-standing ban on openly gay members, and East Texas troop leaders are watching closely. Several East Texas scout leaders are at the Grapevine gathering to add their voice to the issue, and some have already made up their minds.

"Everyone's in an uproar. 'On my honor, I will do my best, to do my duty, to God and my country, to obey the scout law,'" says David L. Perkins of Longview Troop 620.

"'To keep myself physically strongly, mentally awake, and morally straight.' So the second question is morally straight," Perkins added.

Some argue that there is no honor in what's being voted on.

"We are not in the 'accept or reject' business of asking whether someone is atheist or homosexual. But we have to deal with it," he says.

Scouting officials propose allowing openly gay scouts, but retaining the ban on gay adult scout leaders.

"They're going to require all of us to accept the change," says Perkins.

But Perkins argues the supreme court has already ruled on Scout policy.

"The Supreme Court said that we have the right, their decision was we have the right, to accept or reject anyone for cause," he says.

The final vote on the ban is set for Thursday.
