PORTLAND, ME (WCVB/CNN) – A fugitive who evaded the law for 34 years was sentenced to 36 to 40 years in prison Thursday for raping three women in Massachusetts in 1978.
Gary Irving, 51, learned his fate in Norfolk Superior Court, the same court that convicted him more than three decades ago.
After the sentencing, the DA said he's sorry the victims had to wait so long for justice.
Irving was convicted in 1979.
While awaiting sentencing, the judge let him go home to see his parents for a week. He disappeared and never came back.
After 34 years on the run, police found him at a home in Maine in March.
He'd been living there under the name of his younger brother.
Police are not saying what led them to him.
