Charleston Police say a man with a knife tried to steal two containers of laundry detergent from a pharmacy.

HOLLY HILL, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a Holly Hill police officer is recovering after he crashed while chasing a car on Interstate 26.

Police Chief Robert Wunderlich told the Times and Democrat of Orangeburg that officer Tony Muir lost control of his cruiser around 1 a.m. Friday after the car he was chasing blew its engine, spraying the patrolman's windshield with oil and making the pavement slick.

Wunderlich says Muir's cruiser hit some trees and he needed five staples for a head injury but is expected to recover.

Muir knew the driver was driving with a suspended license when he tried to pull her over and the driver tried to ram two patrol cars during the chase. She has not been found.
