CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Charleston police have arrested the man they say used a shattered champagne bottle to rob a West Ashley gas station last week.

St. Julian Ronald Smalls, 44, was arrested Thursday afternoon and charged with armed robbery, according to jail records.

Police say the incident occurred May 27 around 4:45 a.m. at the Sunoco at 1984 Sam Rittenberg Blvd.

According to authorities, Smalls shattered a champagne bottle and used a piece of the broken bottle to rob the gas station. Smalls was able to steal an unknown amount of cash before fleeing the scene.

He is being held in the Charleston County Detention Center.
