JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC)- A James Island student is hoping to spell his way to $30,000 in cash and prizes.

Owen Duffy, a rising eighth-grader at Fort Johnson Middle School, is in Washington, D.C. to compete in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee. The event will take place May 28-30 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center.

As the Lowcountry Spellbound! Champion, Duffy will join 280 spellers from throughout the United States.

Spellers arrived Tuesday morning to take a computer test to gauge their knowledge of both spelling and vocabulary. The vocabulary part is a first for the competition, and was just announced last month.

Duffy will represent Charleston County after beating out 49 other students in the regional bee on March 6.
