James Island student stumbles on 'langlauf' at Scripps Spelling Bee

WASHINGTON, DC (WCSC) -

A James Island student is out at the Scripps National Spelling Bee after failing to spell the word 'langlauf'.

Owen Duffy, a rising eighth-grader at Fort Johnson Middle School, is in Washington, D.C. for the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee. He incorrectly spelled 'langlauf', which is the German word for cross-country skiing.

As the Lowcountry Spellbound! Champion, Duffy joined 280 spellers from throughout the United States.

Spellers arrived Tuesday morning to take a computer test to gauge their knowledge of both spelling and vocabulary. The vocabulary part is a first for the competition, and was just announced last month.

Duffy represented Charleston County after beating out 49 other students in the regional bee on March 6.

The event takes place May 28-30 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center.
