New political party to hold meeting in Charleston

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Organizers of a new political party are holding an informational meeting in Charleston in mid-June.

The American Party, backed by Jim Rex, the Democrat who previously led South Carolina's state Department of Education and ran for governor in 2010, is scheduled to meet at the Congregational Church Social Hall in downtown Charleston on June 13..

The group also has support from Oscar Lovelace, a physician who sought the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 2006.On its website, the group says it wants political parties held accountable for their candidates' actions.

The party is holding a meeting in Columbia at the Sheraton Hotel in Columbia on Thursday.
