Phone scam costs 80-year-old $1,900

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - An 80-year-old woman was scammed out of nearly $2,000 by a man claiming to be a family friend, according to Charleston police.

An incident report states the victim received a call Wednesday around 9 a.m. from a man who told the victim he was a close friend of the family. The suspect said he was arrested in Mexico City and needed $1,900 to make bail.

Police say the victim was asked to send a money gram for $1,900 to a man named Joseph Wilson in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

After the victim sent the money gram, she received a call from a man claiming to be from the U.S. Embassy that said her money would be refunded, but he would need to speak to a lawyer and that would require $2,100, the report states.

Police say the victim did not send the money, and was able to get in touch with the actual family friend who was not in Mexico.
